Sacramento City Fashion Show
My first fashion show was at Sacramento City College in April 2019. I designed a collection which was very personal as it was connected to my cosplay career. Each dress represented a character I desired to create from my past, present, and future plans as well as that experience as a whole.
Inspired by my past cosplays, this dress was a 1950s version of Toothiana, a character from The Rise of the Guardians. As the tooth fairy, she is a very whimsical being and always pays special care to her job. I created a custom feather headpiece to mimic hers as well as incorporate her main colors into the dress. The dress is made of crepe back satin and embroidered tulle with applique details covering the bodice. When I first created the original cosplay, everything failed and I was left in tears. To create this updated version made me feel whole after having such a difficult previous attempt.
Inspired by my present cosplays at the time, this dress was made to resemble Pearl from the show Steven Universe. Pearl is a very organized person with a very geometric personality. I created a simple princess seam bodice with sheer organza shoulders. I added a pleated skirt, but used chiffon to create some flow to pull from Pearl's ballet background. Lastly, I added structured Filipina butterfly sleeves since they have a very organized pleated base.
Pulling from the cosplays I had yet to create, this white dress was inspired by Palutena, my favorite Super Smash Bros character. I had always wanted to cosplay this character, so I decided to take a bite at it in my collection. While I did not meet my goal for the design, I did create a very wearable dress that I have worn myself many times. This dress was created with a matte poly satin with a gathered triangle bust and halter neckline, and a pleated tea length skirt. I also created a skirt topper made of jacquard, trimmed with red gathered tulle details.
Unlike the rest of the collection, this dress was inspired by the personal growth I have made in all my years of cosplay. I have been cosplaying for years and with each cosplay I made came progress and new skills. I began with using my friend as a model. She had a slightly larger bust, so I used this opportunity to learn how to pattern for a larger than standard bust using a full bust adjustment pattern adjustment. I Then created a simple, yet flattering silhouette of soft blue, covered with flower petals to represent the beauty and growth that comes with progression. Lastly, I topped the dress off with a simple cloak to blend with the flowers.
